UA Professor Helps Create Career Resource Encyclopedia

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Arden Gale, an assistant professor in the department of educational leadership, counseling and foundations in UA's College of Education and Health Professions, helped produce the 11th edition of a leading educational sourcebook titled the "Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance." Gale, along with a team of 37 other writers, was commissioned by Ferguson Publishing Company in Chicago, Ill., to create the four-volume encyclopedia that is a basic reference for libraries and career counseling centers across the country.

Gale was specifically responsible for the section on Career Guidance and detailed information on preparing for a career, finding a job, applying for a job and what to expect once you've been hired. Her section includes the "nuts-and-bolts" information that employment seekers need to sharpen their skills as well as tactical information to help them define career objectives, choose and find a career that's the right one.

"When they first meet someone, Americans frequently ask 'What type of work do you do?' Gale said. "How you fit work into your life and what type of work you choose to do influences both your lifestyle and other important social roles in your life. Now that people enjoy greater opportunity of choice throughout their careers, what you do really does become a reflection of who you are and what you believe."

Assistant professor Gale has worked in the University of Arkansas department of educational leadership, counseling, and foundations for since 1997 and earned her Ed.D. in 1989 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va.
