UA School Of Law And The Walton College Of Business To Co-Host Events At The 8th Annual Native American Symposium

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Arkansas School of Law and the Walton College of Business will co-host two events as part of the 8^th Annual Native American Symposium, a series of events across campus discussing issues related to the presence of Indian tribes in the area.

On Monday, Nov. 6 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Room 244 at the Walton College of Business, co-moderators and panelists will discuss the benefits and burdens of doing business in Indian country. Issues discussed will include cross-cultural business management, the federal rules of labor law and tax advantages. Many other issues related to doing business in Indian country as well as responses to questions from the audience will be addressed.

On Friday, Nov. 10 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in Room 326 at the Leflar Law Center, panelists will discuss the Indian Child Welfare Act, the aspect of American Indian law most directly applicable to Arkansas citizens.

This federal statute regulates non-divorce adoption and custody proceedings involving Indian children. In general, jurisdiction for adoptions and custody matters is presumed to be in tribal not state court. The panel will discuss the various aspects concerning this issue, and questions from the audience will be taken as well.
