Alumni Association Commissions Study to Measure Alumni Attitudes To better serve the needs and interests of alumni and friends, the Arkansas Alumni Association has commissioned Performance Enhancement Group Ltd. of Houston to conduct the Alumni Attitude Study. This study will measure alumni attitudes and how they impact participation in association and University of Arkansas events. This is an online, confidential survey that will be sent to all degreed University of Arkansas alumni with an e-mail address. Results will be ready in mid-to-late August and will be shared with staff, administrators, volunteers and alumni at large. During the past year, the association has begun a process to more effectively and efficiently deliver programming, services and communications. Alumni opinions and concerns are an important part of this process. Please help the association better understand what alumni expect from their university and their alumni association by taking a few minutes to complete the survey. Every member's input is critical to helping meet the expectations of all alumni. For convenience, this study is conducted online only, and alumni will not receive any mail or phone calls related to this study. More than 120 universities and colleges across the country have surveyed their alumni through the Alumni Attitude Study, including other Southeastern Conference schools such as Auburn University and the University of Georgia. Noted Mathematician John R. Stallings Jr., 73, Dies at Home in California John Stallings, a University of Arkansas graduate credited with finding a proof for the Poincaré Conjecture, died Nov. 24, 2008, of prostate cancer. He was a member of the faculty at the University of California–Berkeley since 1967. After retiring in 1994, he continued to work with graduate students. Dr. Stallings is survived by Marjorie Mulcahy, his longtime companion. More than a century ago, Henri Poincaré proposed to define a sphere mathematically. He believed that a finite and connected three-dimensional space lacking any boundary could be stretched and shaped into a three-dimensional sphere. Since it was posed, the Poincaré Conjecture has been a central problem in topology. After learning that Stephen Smale of Berkeley had proved the conjecture for surfaces of five dimensions or higher, Stallings devised a proof for dimensions of seven or higher. In the paper “How Not to Prove the Poincaré Conjecture,” Stallings confessed that his goal was to find an ultimate final proof, wryly observing that his error was one of “an inhibition of reasoning by an underlying fear of being wrong. Techniques leading to the abandonment of such inhibitions should be cultivated by every honest mathematician.” In 2003, Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman completed a proof for the most complex case, that of three dimensions. Born in Morrilton, Ark., Stallings earned a bachelor of science degree in mathematical sciences with high honors from the University of Arkansas in 1956. He and English major Dorothy Jeffus were the first two graduates of the Arts and Sciences Honors Studies Program established by philosophy Professor Harold Hantz and English Professor Ben Kimpel in 1954. In his undergraduate honors thesis, “Two Mathematical Theories of Space and Time,” Stallings wrote that the axiom of infinity and of choice “will remain forever uncertain.” He then asked, “Is it not better to practice a form of thought that is aware of its contingency — that is, to work through a theory which we realize to be in some senses impossible to understand — than to pretend to Exist, pretend to Know, like the ordinary, world-busy little man?" Stallings went on to earn his doctorate in mathematics from Princeton in 1959. Mathematical sciences chair Chaim Goodman Strauss said Stallings had visited the department twice within the last decade, once in 2003 and then in May of 2005 to attend a conference in geometry. “Stallings made a lasting contribution toward one of the more outstanding problems in math,” said Goodman-Strauss. Cosmologists today believe the Poincaré Conjecture has implications for ultimately understanding the shape of the universe. “He took trigonometry in an honors section with John Keesee teaching,” recalled Allan Cochran, professor of mathematical sciences. “He told me at a conference he attended here at the university that the experience in that class hooked him and led him to change his major to mathematics.” His obituary appeared in the New York Times on Monday, Jan. 18: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/19/us/19stallings.html

University of Arkansas Alumni Are Competing and Coaching in the 2008 Olympics The Arkansas Alumni Association congratulates former and student-athletes for their accomplishments.
Wallace Spearmon, USA BSE '96 Spearmon, a Fayetteville native and resident, is making his Olympic debut and hopes to lead what will be a strong U.S. contingent in the 200m (Aug. 20) and the 4x100-meter relay (Aug. 22) in Beijing. The son of a former Razorback sprinter, he used a late surge to finish third in the 200m at the U.S. Olympic Trials. He was only nine hundredths of a second away from staying home. His best friend, Tyson Gay, is also his training partner and college teammate at Arkansas. Tyson Gay, USA Gay, a Lexington, Ky., native and resident, took no chances during the 100m Olympic Trials to make his first Olympic team. He recorded 9.77 seconds in his heat to break Maurice Greene's American record of 9.79 set in Athens as well as Greene's Olympic Trials record of 9.91 set in 2004. That time makes Gay the third-fastest man with the fourth-fastest time of all time. He is in Beijing with his best friend and teammate, Wallace Spearmon. He will compete in the 100 meters (Aug. 16) and the 4x100-meter relay (Aug. 22).
Alistair Cragg, Ireland Alistair is looking for his first Olympic medal in the 1,500 meters (Aug. 19) and the 5,000 meters (Aug. 23). He was a 13-time All-American, a seven-time NCAA champion and a nine-time SEC Champion at the University of Arkansas. He is a South African native but competes for Ireland after changing his citizenship to that country. Christin Wurth-Thomas, USA BSBA '03 A Bloomington, IL, native and Springdale resident, Christin holds the University of Arkansas 1500m outdoors record (4:10.49), the top four times overall in the event and the second-fastest 6000m cross-country time (19:33.55) in school history. In front of a home crowd in Arkansas at the Tyson Invitational, she won the 1500m by four seconds in 4 minutes, 27.18 seconds. She is making her Olympic debut in the 1,500 meters (Aug. 23). Amy Yoder Begley, USA BSE '01 Amy is making her Olympic debut in Beijing in the 10,000 meters (Aug. 15). The Kendallville, IN, native now resides in Beaverton, Ore.
Deena Kastor, USA BA '96 Competing in her third Olympics in the marathon (Aug. 17), Deena is the top female distance runner in the United States. She took home the bronze medal in the women's marathon in Athens in 2004. The Agoura, CA, native now resides in Mammoth Lakes, CA.

Having played several sports growing up, she switched to the pole vault in 1999 so she could get a Division I scholarship. April resides in Springdale.
LaShaunte'a Moore, USA LaShaunte'a will compete in 4x100-meter relay in the Olympics for the second time in her career, making her hometown of Akron, OH, proud. Now a Fayetteville resident, her college accolades include winning the 200m at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships in 22.37 seconds and finished fourth in the 100m in 11.31 seconds. At Arkansas, she ran alongside four-time Olympic medalist Veronica Campbell-Brown. Veronica Campbell-Brown, Jamaica BSBA '06 Veronica became the first Razorback women's Olympic gold medalist in school history at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
