University of Arkansas Law Students Semifinalists in Regional Moot Court Competition

Cassandra Baldwin and Gabriel Mallard, third-year students at the University of Arkansas School of Law, advanced to the semifinal round of the Region IX National Moot Court Tournament held Nov. 19-20, 2004, in Little Rock, Ark.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Cassandra Baldwin and Gabriel Mallard, third-year students at the University of Arkansas School of Law, advanced to the semifinal round of the Region IX National Moot Court Tournament held Nov. 19-20, 2004, in Little Rock, Ark.

Baldwin, of Little Rock, and Mallard, of Fort Smith, Ark., were defeated in the semifinals by a team from the University of Kansas, the tournament's eventual winner. Baldwin and Mallard advanced to the semifinals after defeating another Kansas team in the quarterfinals and teams from Creighton University and the University of Nebraska in the preliminary rounds.

Baldwin and Mallard were selected to represent the School of Law in the regional competition after their showings in the internal Ben J. Altheimer Moot Court Tournament held in the spring of 2004. Mallard was named best oralist, and with his partner, Trent Kelly of Warren, Ark., won the final round of the event.  Baldwin, meanwhile, was selected best oralist in the preliminary rounds, and along with her partner, Laura Asbury of Fort Smith, won the best brief award at the competition.

The UA team was coached by Professor Kathryn Sampson, associate clinical professor in the school's legal research and writing program. Site assistance was provided by Law School faculty members Steve Sheppard, Dent Gitchel, Terry Seligmann, Kim Coats, Sharon Foster, Stanley Adelman, Tim Tarvin, Don Judges, Robert Laurence and Lonnie Beard.
