Science Writers' Conference Gets A Boost From Area Sponsors

Fayetteville - The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing national science writers' conference being hosted by the University of Arkansas later this month is getting a boost from area sponsors.

The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing is a group of national journalists and scientists committed to improving the quality of science news reaching the general public. The University of Arkansas is hosting the 42nd annual meeting of CASW from Nov. 7-10, 2004, at the University of Arkansas Center for Continuing Education.

"We are grateful to our many sponsors," Alan Altom, assistant director of corporate and foundation relations said. "This is a great opportunity to showcase UA faculty and research, and we're fortunate to have been selected to host the conference this year. This conference attracts science writers from all over the nation and without the generous support from our local sponsors it would not have been possible for us to host this conference."

As of Nov. 1, the combined value of the sponsorships is $106,000. The sponsors include:

The conference program will feature UA researchers, including Brent Smith, sociology; Donald Judges, law; Fred Stephen, entomology; Steve Stephenson, biological sciences; Fred Spiegel, biological sciences; Peter Ungar, anthropology; Laurent Bellaiche, physics; Jerry Havens, chemical engineering; and Jean-Francois Meullenet, food science. In addition, there will be researchers from the Department of Defense, the University of California Berkeley, the National Institutes of Health, the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the University of California, San Diego, the University of Texas at Austin, and the Joint Global Change Research Institute.
