Distinguished Professor Honored by Alma Mater

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Distinguished Professor Charles Wilkins of the department of chemistry and biochemistry will receive an Alumni Achievement Award in Pure Science from his alma mater, the University of Oregon, November 12. Wilkins earned his doctorate from the University of Oregon in 1966, working on organic reaction mechanisms with Lloyd Dolby.

He is a well known leader in the technique of Fourier transform mass spectrometry. He and his students were also among the first to demonstrate the feasibility of a gas chromatography-infrared-mass spectrometry combination.

The award is being given in recognition of his pioneering discoveries in analytical spectroscopy and contributions in the area of computer-assisted chemical analysis, which resulted in his 1980 election to chair of the ACS Division of Computers in Chemistry and his 1991 election as chair of the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry.

The Alumni Achievement Award is given on the basis of professional and personal achievements and service that exemplify the Oregon spirit and traditions of leadership and excellence.
