UA SCHOOL OF LAW TRIAL COMPETITION TO BEGIN SEPTEMBER 23

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Arkansas School of Law will host the 2002 William H. Sutton Barristers' Union Trial Competition beginning Monday, Sept. 23, in the Courtroom of the Leflar Law Center.

A total of 32 two-person teams will compete in the intra-school, five-round event with the finals set for Friday, Oct. 4. All second- and third-year students are eligible to participate in the annual event in which four trial competition scholarships will be awarded at its conclusion.

The competition involves teams working with a previously drafted record, presenting an opening statement, examining and cross-examining witnesses and giving closing arguments in a mock trial setting. Winning teams in the opening round will move on to the Sweet Sixteen on Monday, Sept. 30. The Elite Eight round will be held Tuesday, Oct. 1 with the Final Four set for Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Trial competition scholarships for the 2002 event will be provided by Bobby Lee Odom ('70); Don R. Elliott, Jr. ('78); Russell B. Winburn ('87); J. Timothy Smith ('91) and Conrad T. Odom ('91).
