UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS UNITED WAY FUND STILL NEEDS CONTRIBUTIONS

The University of Arkansas United Way Campaign is still far short of its goal of $120,000 that goes to support the Washington County United Way.

It is wonderful that so many of you have made contributions as part of the disaster relief funds in response to the tragic events that transpired on September 11. However, the agencies that benefit from the United Way need continued support more than ever as the ripple effect of the attacks has been felt both here in Northwest Arkansas and nation-wide. Member agencies are already providing counseling to people in our area and assistance to their national affiliates like the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. Our contributions to the United Way provide an underpinning, a web of protection to people in our community that is in itself a response to what some have characterized as an attack on the American way of life. But our local need is still high -- and it may even grow as reservists and others are summoned to active duty because local families will certainly be affected.

The services provided by our local agencies are not just event-oriented. They are on-going twelve months out of the year, whether or not a disaster strikes, because the needs of people in our community are on-going. Their tragedies may be small-scale, rather than ones with international impact, but they are people who need help right here at home.

The contribution or pledge that University employees are being asked to make now is for next year, 2002. The option of payroll deduction spreads it out over twelve months. Even a small contribution can make a big difference. Contributions can be designated to go to a specific agency. Also, please remember, contributions are tax deductible and 90 percent of all contributions goes directly to the local agencies.

The campaign will be wrapped up on October 26. If you haven't already done so, please consider contributing to the University United Way Campaign.

Remember, we didn't reach our campaign goal last year - and this year there are no reserves to fall back on, so our member agencies are truly at risk.
