PHYSICS MAJOR WINS NATIONAL AWARD

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - University of Arkansas physics major Anindita Basu of Kolkata (Calcutta), India, recently worked a summer internship at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York.

The American Physical Society (APS) and IBM co-sponsor the research internship program for undergraduate women to encourage them to pursue graduate studies in science and engineering. The internships are salaried positions, last typically 10 weeks, and include a $2,500 grant and the opportunity to work with an IBM mentor at one of three IBM research locations-San Jose, Calif., Austin, Texas, or Yorktown Heights, N.Y.

The IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center is the headquarters for the IBM Research Division -- the largest industrial research organization in the world. The research focuses primarily on physical and computer sciences, semiconductors, systems technology, mathematics and information services and applications and solutions.

Basu, one of ten students selected from 9,000 applications for the internship, is enrolled in the UA Honors College and is a chancellor's scholar. She also attended the U.S. Particle Accelerator School in June at the University of California at Santa Barbara. She is the daughter of Ashoke Chandra Basu and Rita Basu of Kolkata.
