University of Arkansas Student Honored as Recipient of 2003 David L. Boren NSEP Scholarship

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - University of Arkansas student Alexander Hunt has been named as the 2003 recipient of the David L. Boren NSEP Scholarship. A native of Fayetteville, Hunt is a Four- Year Honors Scholar, a member of the Honors College, and a Chancellor's Scholar majoring in music and music theory as well as European studies and French.

"Alexander is the perfect example of how talented students are thinking and studying across disciplines," newly appointed Dean of Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences Don Bobbit said. "These students are more competitive at the national level, winning major scholarships and opening doors to special opportunities."

NSEP was established in 1991 under the National Security Education Act. Oklahoma Senator David L. Boren originally authored the NSEP which was designed to provide American undergraduates with resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in various countries and areas of the world. Hunt will use the Boren NSEP scholarship in conjunction with his Sturgis Study Abroad Grant to further his studies in St. Petersburg, Russia.

"Alexander speaks three languages fluently," Bobbit said. "He loves music, and he combines that with a keen interest in international relations. He is an obvious choice for this scholarship."

Hunt being named as the 2003 Boren NSEP scholarship recipient marks the second year in a row the award came to a UA student. Daniel Hazman, a Chancellor's Scholar majoring in international business at the Walton College of Business received the 2002 Boren NSEP scholarship. Hazman is currently continuing his studies in Brazil.
