UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS NAMES NEW ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Arkansas is pleased to announce Dr. Susan E. Borrego has been hired as the assistant vice chancellor for student affairs. She assumes the position effective August 11, 2003. Borrego succeeds Dr. James Conneely, who resigned in January to become the vice president for student affairs at Eastern Kentucky University.

"I believe that student affairs professionals are educators," Borrego said. "Students benefit when we all understand that the entire campus is a learning community. Some professionals work in classrooms as educators and some through events and activities as educators. I have been a faculty member and an administrator, and I am more convinced than ever of the integral role of student affairs in shaping environments that deepen the quality of student learning. I am looking forward to working with the strong team of educators at the University in support of student learning."

Dr. Borrego received her B.A. degree in Speech and Communication from Northwest Nazarene College, her M.A. degree in Social Science from Azusa Pacific University and her Ph.D. at Claremont Graduate University focusing in the area of higher education and social justice. Her research study, Expanding the Diversity Conversation: The Emergence of Working Class Culture, explored working-class issues in the context of diversity. Her monograph, Class Matters: Beyond Access to Inclusion, was published by NASPA in March 2003.

Prior to coming to the University, Dr. Borrego served as an associate professor at Rossier School of Education teaching classes in Higher Education, advising Master's and Doctoral students and co-directing the MA program. She most recently served as the associate dean/director for the Office for Minority Student Affairs at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA.

Dr. Borrego's 20-year career has included positions in admissions, institutional advancement, news and information services as well as student services. She has served as a consultant for the Irvine Foundation Campus Diversity Initiative and a research associate at the Center for Urban Education USC. She has a long record of campus and community leadership.
