Fun Photo Opportunities Blossom During Annual Engine Week

How do College of Engineering students entertain themselves? Why, by launching paper airplanes, dropping eggs from balconies and duct-taping each other to walls, of course.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - How do College of Engineering students entertain themselves? Why, by launching paper airplanes, dropping eggs from balconies and duct-taping each other to walls, of course.

For the past 96 years, spring has been synonymous with Engine Week in the College of Engineering. Starting today, April 4, and continuing through Friday, April 8, students will compete in events ranging from tug-o-war to a miniature golf tournament. 

But they will also compete in events a bit more unusual, such as the well-known "Stick 'Em Up" contest, which will start at 2:15 p.m. Friday, April 8, in the Atrium of the Bell Engineering Center. Students have two minutes to "stick up" a team member to a wall 24 inches above the ground using no more than one full roll of duct tape as well as all of their engineering knowledge. 

Eggs will drop from the balcony into the Bell Atrium beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 6.  Students put their egg in one basket - or container - that they've constructed, then drop it from the third floor balcony of Bell. Intact eggs will then be dropped off the fourth floor balcony until only one "good egg" is left unsplattered. Observers are advised to "walk on eggshells" to avoid ending up with egg on their faces.

The Post-It note competition promises to be a memo-rable event. Students participating in this new contest will use the sheets to construct designs on the walls of Bell Atrium beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 7. Entries will be judged on creativity and level of detail.

"Engine Week is a chance for students to put their engineering skills to use in a fun, interesting way," said Thomas Carter, assistant dean. "It's also a great way to help them relieve stress."

  11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. free popcorn, Bell Engineering Atrium
  2 to 3 p.m. Egg Drop Contest, Bell Engineering Atrium
  3 to 4 p.m., Quiz Bowl final round, Bell 273
• Thursday, April 7
  1 p.m. Post-It Note Competition, Bell Engineering Atrium
