FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Robert B Leflar, the Arkansas Bar Foundation Professor of Law, has received three grants for comparative research on systems for preventing medical errors in Japan and the U.S.

The three grants were awarded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Japan Foundation, and the Center for Global Partnership. Professor Leflar's project explores ways of improving the processes of resolution, within and outside the judicial system, of disputes over responsibility for medical injury, in a fashion that encourages rather than undermines quality improvement efforts.

Professor Leflar will spend the 2005-2006 academic year in Japan pursuing this research, and will also teach classes in tort law and health law at the University of Tokyo, Japan's top academic institution.
