University of Arkansas to Hold Second Summer Institute for Gifted and Talented Scholars

The University of Arkansas Summer Institute for Gifted and Talented Scholars will host its second annual program for accelerated students from Arkansas and surrounding states.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Arkansas Summer Institute for Gifted and Talented Scholars will host its second annual program for accelerated students from Arkansas and surrounding states. The Summer Institute, a three-week residential program for rising 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grade students, will be held July 10-30 on the U of A campus.

The academic curriculum is the centerpiece of the Summer Institute experience. Specifically designed for the gifted student, all courses provide an intellectually stimulating atmosphere through hands-on learning with an emphasis on writing, communication, debate, logical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students choose a course of study in one of the general academic areas.

Led by University of Arkansas faculty, specific course offerings reflect the expertise of the instructional staff. Course titles for summer 2005 include, "Acting Without a Net," "Biology Down Under: Zoology and Marine Biology of Australia," "The Good, the Bad and Genetically Engineered," "Human and Comparative Physiology for Premed Students," "Millionaire 101: How to Get Insanely Rich," "Create a Magazine," "Hot Topics and You" and "Exploring Architecture: Making Buildings, Making Cities."

In addition to the academic coursework, students will take a class on leadership as well as be involved with a service-learning project. Students will present their work at an exhibition at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, in the Arkansas Union. The exhibition will be followed by a graduation ceremony.
